The bridge of the Balls
The iconic Puente de las Bolas, which connects the island with the fortress, is one of the most fascinating structures of the Castillo de San Gabriel. Its origin dates back to the 18th century (1771) when it was built to protect the entrance to the port of Arrecife from possible pirate invasions. Its name comes from the stone balls that adorn its ends and were used to stop the advance of enemies. This bridge not only fulfils a practical function, but is also a symbol of the resistance and engineering of the time.
The Museum of History of Arrecife: a trip back in time
Within the walls of the Castillo de San Gabriel, you will have the opportunity to explore the Museum of History of Arrecife, a space dedicated to preserve and spread the cultural heritage of the island. Here you can immerse yourself in the history of Lanzarote through a variety of exhibitions and displays ranging from prehistory to contemporary times.
Among the things you will be able to see, know and learn during your visit to the Arrecife History Museum are: archaeological artifacts that reveal the life of the first inhabitants of the island, historical documents that narrate the most relevant events of its past, and works of art that reflect the rich cultural diversity of the region. In this museum, more than 3,000 pieces of great cultural and historical value are exhibited in 14 rooms, including primitive utensils, idols, handicrafts and documents.
