On the Canary Island of Lanzarote, you will find a unique treasure that combines natural majesty with human creativity, the Jameos del Agua Auditorium. It is located in the north of the island, in the municipality of Haría.

This place is much more than just an auditorium, it is a masterpiece with the hallmark and classic style of its creator César Manrique: “total art”. It consists of the harmonious combination of architecture with an exceptional natural environment. It is definitely a must on your trip to Lanzarote for relaxation, exploration and contact with nature.

Origin and formation

auditorio jameos del agua lanzarote

The Auditorium of Jameos del Agua lies inside a volcanic tube that was formed more than 4.000 years ago during the eruption of the volcano La Corona. This volcanic tube originated when hot lava flowed into the sea, creating a tunnel that cooled and solidified on the outside, while the inside continued to flow until the eruption ceased, leaving a series of underground caves.

The term “jameo” refers to the openings in the roof of the volcanic tubes caused by the collapse of the roof. In turn, the full name is given for the existence of a magical inner lake, which originates from the seepage of seawater. These formations are characteristic of the island’s volcanic geology and have been ingeniously used to create the Jameos del Agua Auditorium.

Natural Auditorium

What makes Jameos del Agua so special is its natural auditorium, a concert hall unique in the world. With a capacity for 550 people, this space offers you an incomparable listening experience. Its excellent acoustics are attributed to the shape of the cave and the basalt stone from which it is formed.

As you can imagine, it’s not just the acoustics that make it so special. That is combined with the natural spectacle offered by the volcanic tube. The concerts and events you are lucky enough to attend will take on a magical dimension, where the music merges with the underground environment, creating a truly unique atmosphere.

Aquatic habitat

Besides the auditorium, Jameos del Agua houses a unique aquatic habitat that will leave you amazed. Inside the cave, there is a lake of crystalline waters where a unique species of blind albino crab, known as “jameíto” (Munidopsis polymorpha), lives. This endemic species of Lanzarote is one of the few species of freshwater crabs in the world and its presence in Jameos del Agua is a living testimony to the island’s unique biodiversity.

Not only can you find this famous crab, but also 77 other species of great scientific interest and of outstanding singularity. At Banana Palm Bay we would like to remind you that the jameito is susceptible to contact with metals, so it is strictly forbidden to throw coins or waste of any kind into the lake.

What to see and do in Jameos del Agua

As well as offering live shows, such as musical or theatre events, the Jameos del Agua Auditorium offers so many possibilities that you’ll never want to leave. The views over the artificial lake outside are wonderful, thanks to the contrasts between the blue of the water, the dark volcanic rock, and the green of the palm trees and numerous cacti. The best part is the view from above, which allows you to appreciate all this, plus the sea on the horizon.

After enjoying this dreamlike view, you can go inside and buy a comforting drink at the Bar La Galeria cafeteria. In addition, the restaurant will allow you to enjoy the best Canarian dishes and wines in a unique setting of volcanic stone, enhanced by beautiful, dimmed lights. Before or after your meal, you can visit the inner lake and marvel at its uniqueness and natural beauty.

Jameos del Agua is a sensory spectacle you will never forget, as even the chairs, tables and lamps in the centre are considered works of art. They are made from the buoys and pots of ships, so they take us into a kind of maritime environment.

The House of Volcanoes

If you want to live a complete experience that will stay with you forever, then you must visit La Casa de los Volcanes, an innovative museum inside Jameos del Agua.

This museum is dedicated to the geology and volcanology of Lanzarote. If you visit it you will have the opportunity to explore the geological history of the island, from its volcanic origins to its current landscape. Through virtual, interactive and multimedia exhibits, you can learn interesting facts about the formation of the Corona volcanic tube. You will also learn about the formation of volcanoes, historical eruptions and the influence of volcanism on the daily life of the island’s inhabitants.

The Casa de los Volcanes has the César Manrique room, in collaboration with the César Manrique Foundation, which is dedicated exclusively to the Lanzarote artist and his work.

In short, the Jameos del Agua Auditorium is a masterpiece that combines natural majesty with human creativity. This mystical place offers you a unique experience that combines music, gastronomy, nature and biodiversity. When you visit it, you will get an impression that will last for a long time.
